Here's one for all the Johnny boys of the world - you know the type, rebellious, hair full of gel and a leather jacket . They might own a motorcycle or pick fights in bars, which makes them very attractive to girls.
The famous sisters recorded this in 1962, but Glen Miller was first to perform this song with his orchestra in 1938.
I especially like the lines "you make my sad heart jump with joy" and "you're not handsome, it's true".
(Ed Rose / Abe Olman)
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! How you can love Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Heavens above You make my sad heart jump with joy And when you're near I just can't sit still a minute I'm so, Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Please tell me dear What makes me love you so? You're not handsome, it's true But when I look at you I just, Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh! da-da-da
All the girls are crazy about a certain little lad Although he's very very bad He could be oh so good when he wanted to Bad or good he understood about love & other things For every girl in town followed him around just to hold his hand and sing
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny Johnny! How you can love Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny Johnny! Heavens above, way above You make my sad heart jump with joy And when you're near I just can't sit still another minute Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny Johnny! Please tell me dear What makes me love you so? You're not handsome, it is true But when I look at you I just, Oh, Johnny Johnny Johnny! My! da-da-da
A 1956 song by the huge Bo Diddley, who passed away recently. The title of the song "Who do you love" is a pun on hoodoo.
Here's a list of bands that covered it: The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Band, The Blues Project, The Doors, George Thorogood And The Destroyers, Golden Earring, Juicy Lucy, King Earl Boogie Band, The Meteors, The Misunderstood, Patti Smith, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Ronnie Hawkins, Tom Rush, Townes Van Zandt, UFO, The Woolies and Cross Canadian Ragweed. (according to wikipedia)
The ice-wagon mentioned in the song is most likely slang for a hearse.
Bo Diddley recorded "Who Do You Love" with Los Lobos for the "La Bamba" soundtrack. (That's Ritchie Valens in the picture below.)
I walk 47 miles of barbed wire, I use a cobra-snake for a necktie, I got a brand new house on the roadside, Made from rattlesnake hide, I got a brand new chimney made on top, Made out of a human skull, Now come on take a walk with me, Arlene, And tell me, who do you love?
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
Tombstone hand and a graveyard mind, Just 22 and I don’t mind dying.
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
I rode around the town, use a rattlesnake whip, Take it easy arlene, don’t give me no lip,
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
Night was dark, but the sky was blue, Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew, Heard a bump, and somebody screamed, You should have heard just what I seen.
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
Arlene took me by my hand, And she said ooowee bo, you know I understand.
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
This is the german version of Tommy, recorded by Twinkle. Originally in english, Tommy was produced by Joe Meek and first recorded by 60s girl group Reparata and the Delrons. Twinkle also made an english cover in 1965.
No lyrics were found and I don't understand half of what she's saying. ;<
This is a lovely clip from Broadway Melody of 1938 (1937) and Judy Garland was 15 here. The song is based on a popular song called "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want To Do It)" (music by James V. Monaco, lyrics by Joseph McCarthy), first published in 1913. Judy got her part on Broadway Melody of 1938 after she sang it to Clark Gable at his birthday party. The aditional lyrics concerning Mr Gable were added by Roger Edens.
Dear Mr. Gable I am writing this to you And I hope that you will read it so you'll know My heart beats like a hammer And I stutter and I stammer Every time I see you at the picture show I guess I'm just another fan of yours And I thought I'd write and tell you so
You made me love you I didn't wanna do it I didn't wanna do it You made me love you And all the time you knew it I guess you always knew it You made me happy Sometimes you made me glad But there were times, sir You made me feel so sad You made me sigh, 'cause I didn't wanna tell you I didn't wanna tell you I think you're grand, that's true Yes, I do, 'deed I do, you know I do I must tell you what I'm feeling The very mention of your name Sends my heart reeling You know you made me love you!
Aw, gee, Mr. Gable I don't wanna bother you! Guess you got a lotta girls That tell you the same thing And if you don't wanna read this Well, you don't have to But I just had to tell you about the time I saw you in "It Happened One Night," That was the first time I ever saw you And I knew right then you were The nicest fella in the movies! I guess it was 'cause you acted so, well So natural like - not like a real actor at all But just like any fella you'd meet at school or at a party Then one time I saw you in a picture With Joan Crawford And I had to cry a little, 'cause You loved her so much and you couldn't have her Not till the end of the picture, anyway
And then one time I saw you in person You were making a personal appearance at the theatre And I was standing there when you got out of your car And you almost knocked me down! Oh - but it wasn't your fault! Naw, I was in the way But you looked at me, and you smiled Yeah! You smiled right at me as if you meant it And I cried all the way home Just 'cause you smiled at me for being in your way! Aw, I'll never forget it, Mr. Gable Honest, you're my favorite actor!
I don't care what happens Let the whole world stop As far as I'm concerned You'll always be the top 'Cause you know you made me love you!
