Elli et Jacno - Je t'aime tant

Beautifully sincere song from french duo Elli Medeiros (vocals & lyrics) & Denis Quilliard "Jacno", ex-Stinky Toys.

The lyrics go something like this : as soon as I'm gone/you say "she doesn't love me"/open your eyes/look at me/my life would be nothing without you

Pseudo Echo - A Beat For You

And now, a little bit of australian new wave with this 1984 song from Pseudo Echo. Pseudo Echo was (I'm sorry, is, if I believe their official website) Brian Canham and Pierre Gigliotti, who met at school. They take their name from a synthesizer manual, pseudo echo machine being one of the sounds the machine could produce.

In my life I've many strong desires
And still in all I'm reaching for the fire
You never look, you never see
You never notice when you're next to me
But feel my heart, it's burning with desire

There's a beat for you in my heart
I tell you true from the start

Catch a glimpse, remember it forever
And still I try to keep myself together
You never speak, you never hear
You're never closer when I want you near
But feel my heart, it's burning with desire

There's a beat for you in my heart
I tell you true form the start

I Want to Spend Christmas with Elvis - Little Lambsie Penn

Don't we all, "Little Lambsie Penn"!
Note : although it may look like it, we're not obsessed with Elvis. Personally I like Buddy Holly ten thousand times better.

A pop music sub-genre called the "cash-in record," this takes place when a musical star becomes so famous that other people (read: record companies) feel obliged to perform songs about him or her. Elvis certainly falls into this category, wherein results this record, also performed by Debby Dabney and co-written by Bobby Darin. Other examples include "I Want to Spend Xmas With Elvis" by Marlene Paul (different spelling, different song) and "Elvis For Christmas" by Mad Milo, a Buchanan-Goodman styled novelty record. Note that these are just the Christmas-oriented Elvis cash-ins; there were plenty of others not related to the holiday, like "My Boy Elvis" by Janis Martin

To rock your christmas, I will now re-direct you to the site where I took this information from : mistletunes

The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to whomever stops by!

Written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore) was first released by Frankie Valli in 1965.

This well-known version by The Walker Brothers is from '66.

Loneliness
Is a cloak you wear
A deep shade of blue
Is always there

The sun ain`t gonna shine anymore
The moon ain`t gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you`re without love (baby)

Emptiness
Is a place you`re in
With nothing to lose
But no more to win

The sun ain`t gonna shine anymore
The moon ain`t gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you`re without love

Lonely, without you baby
Girl I need you
I can`t go on

The sun ain`t gonna shine anymore
The moon ain`t gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
When you're without love (baby)

The sun ain`t gonna shine anymore...

Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs - Li'l Red Riding Hood

US #1 hit of summer 1966. Owooo!
Sam "The Sham" recorded this song with his second set of "Pharaohs" (the first ones left after financial disagreements).
Below, a youtube cover - now, youtube users covers are usually really boring, but I think this one has a sweet voice.

Owoooooooo!
Who's that I see walkin' in these woods?
Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood.
Hey there Little Red Riding Hood,
You sure are looking good.
You're everything a big bad wolf could want.
Listen to me.

Little Red Riding Hood
I don't think little big girls should
Go walking in these spooky old woods alone.
Owoooooooo!

What big eyes you have,
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad.
So just to see that you don't get chased
I think I ought to walk with you for a ways.

What full lips you have.
They're sure to lure someone bad.
So until you get to grandma's place
I think you ought to walk with me and be safe.

I'm gonna keep my sheep suit on
Until I'm sure that you've been shown
That I can be trusted walking with you alone.
Owoooooooo!

Little Red Riding Hood
I'd like to hold you if I could
But you might think I'm a big bad wolf so I won't.
Owoooooooo!

What a big heart I have-the better to love you with.
Little Red Riding Hood
Even bad wolves can be good.
I'll try to be satisfied just to walk close by your side.
Maybe you'll see things my way before we get to grandma's place.

Little Red Riding Hood
You sure are looking good
You're everything that a big bad wolf could want.
Owoooooooo! I mean baaaaaa! Baaa?

Pete Molinari - I don't like the man I am

This new (2008) yet timeless cover is brought to you by Pete Molinari, british singer/songwriter. They say he grew up with the Bob Dylan records of his brothers (can you tell?). He recorded an album with artist Billy Childish, who first performed this song.

no video, decent sound :

live version, bad sound :

I'm lying through my teeth
I can't express my grief
I ain't got the belief
It feels like I'm going beneath

Oh I can't love you
I really don't think that I can
Oh I can't love you
'cause I don't like the man I am

Ah there's a fool inside my head
He's making me see red
I don't want to get ahead
Oh I don't want to be led

Oh I can't love you
I really don't think that I can
Oh I can't love you
'cause I don't like the man I am

If I could only understand
The type of man I am
But I don't believe that I can
I never drew the plan

Oh I can't love you
I really don't think that I can
Oh I can't love you
'cause I don't like the man I am

Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen

British glam/pop band Sweet ("The Sweet" before '75) released this in '78 - a big hit.

Punk had swept almost every last vestige of the old glam rock hierarchy into obscurity, and some two years had passed since the band even looked like bothering the British chart. Their American acclaim was growing fast, however, and that year's Level Headed album emerged a magnificent slice of mature reflection, heavy and heady in equal doses. Even within such exalted company, "Love Is Like Oxygen" glittered, a harmonic rocker highlighted by an insistent guitar riff and a winter-clear piano motif. Sundry sour critics have since pointed out that its lyric was little more than a softer rock rewrite of Hall & Oates' "Grounds for Separation," but that mattered naught. Edited down to become the band's first single of the year, it shot into the Top Ten on both sides of the Atlantic.

Time on my side
I got it all
I've heard that pride
Always comes before a fall
There's a rumour goin' round the town
That you don't want me around
I can't shake off my city blues
Everyway I turn I lose

Chorus
Love is like oxygen
You get too much you get too high
Not enough and you're gonna die
Love gets you high

Time is no healer
When you're not there
Lonely fever
Sad words in the air
Some things are better left unsaid
I'm gonna spend my days in bed
I'll walk the streets at night
To be hidden by the city lights city lights

Roy Orbison - Love Hurts

Here's a song from Roy "master of heartbroken lyrics" Orbison , in memoriam (it is the 20th anniversary of his death today). He died of a heart attack (!) at age 52 whilst visiting his mother in Tennessee.

Bonus : a song entitled "The day Roy Orbison died" by a band called The Marys.

Love hurts, love scars
Love wounds, and mars any heart
Not tough or stong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud, holds a lot of rain
Love hurts... ooh, ooh love hurts

I'm young, I know, but even so
I know a thing or two, and I learned from you
I really learned a lot, really learned a lot
Love is like a stove, it burns you when it's hot
Love hurts... ooh, ooh love hurts

Some fools rave of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
They're not foolin me

I know it isn't true, I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie, made to make you blue
Love hurts...
Ooh, ooh love hurts, ooh, ooh love hurts

I know it isn't true, I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie, made to make you blue
Love hurts...
Ooh, ooh love hurts, ooh, ooh love hurts

Riz Ortolani - Love With Fun

Love With Fun is a variation on the main theme from Cannibal Holocaust.
Riz Ortolani also composed the soundtrack for Mondo Cane, winning a Grammy in 1962 with the film's main theme, More.

The images in the video may be a bit violent, but they're by no means gory (okay, so there's a girl puking and a good looking corpse, unless you're hyper sensitive you won't be bothered).

Lou Reed - Satellite of Love

1972.

There's good information about it on wikipedia.

Satellite's gone up to the skies
Thing like that drive me out of my mind

I watched it for a little while
I like to watch things on TV

Satellite of love
Satellite of love
Satellite of love
Satellite of ...

Satellite's gone way up to Mars
Soon it will be filled with parking cars

I watch it for a little while
I love to watch things on TV

Satellite of love ...

I've been told that you've been bold
With Harry, Mark and John
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, to Thursday
With Harry, Mark and John

Satellite's gone up to the skies
Thing like that drive me out of my mind

I love to watch things on TV

Domina - You Got My Soul

An italo-disco gem, sung by Dora Carofiglio of Valerie Dore and Novecento.
Unfortunately I only understand half of the words, otherwise there would be lyrics. ;>

The Walker Brothers - Nite Flights

And this one's from The Walker Brothers' last album, also titled Nite Flights (1978). Written and sung by Scott Walker.
David Bowie covered it in 1993 on Black Tie White Noise.

There's no hold
The moving has come through
The danger brushing you
Turns its face into the heat and runs the tunnels
It's so cold
The dark dug up by dogs
The stiches torn and broke
The raw meat fist you choke
Has hit the bloodlite

Glass traps open and close on nite flights
Broken necks feather weights press the walls
Be my love, we will be gods on nite flights
With only one promise, only one way to fall

Glass traps open and close on nite flights
Broken necks feather weights press the walls
Be my love, we will be gods on nite flights
With only one promise, only one way to fall

On nite flights
Only one way to fall

Barry Louis Polisar - All I Want Is You

Barry Louis Polisar not only makes songs but also books for children.
This video is from the movie Juno (which I have not seen) and the song appeared on his 1993 album Old Dog, New Tricks.

If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee.
And if I was a tree growing tall and greeen
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves

If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee.
And if I was a tree growing tall and greeen
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were a river in the mountains tall,
The rumble of your water would be my call.
If you were the winter, I know I'd be the snow
Just as long as you were with me, when the cold winds blow.

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were a wink, I'd be a nod
If you were a seed, well I'd be a pod.
If you were the floor, I'd wanna be the rug
And if you were a kiss, I know I'd be a hug

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were the wood, I'd be the fire.
If you were the love, I'd be the desire.
If you were a castle, I'd be your moat,
And if you were an ocean, I'd learn to float.

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

Scott Walker - Best of Both Worlds

From Scott Walker's second album Scott 2 (1968).

Scott was heavily influenced by Jacques Brel and Phil Spector's wall of sound in the early period of his solo career. Artists his music has influenced throughout the years include David Bowie, Brian Eno, Billy Mackenzie, Radiohead, David Sylvian, Douglas Pearce, Sting, Marc Almond, Jarvis Cocker, Alison Goldfrapp, The Divine Comedy and The Last Shadow Puppets.

Best of both worlds,
That's what you want
All your own way,
That's not my way
I won't share you,
I couldn't bear to
It's time for you to choose
Which one you'd rather loose
Could you love me,
And forget me
Are you sorry,
That you've met me?
What we've been through,
Means nothing to you

I can't satisfy you

You want best of both worlds
Make your fickle mind up
I won't stay while you enjoy
Best of both worlds

I have loved you
Since I found you
You belong here,
Just look around you
Keep your true love,
Or take your new love
You must choose between us,
You want best of both worlds
Make your fickle mind up
I won't stay while you enjoy
Best of both worlds

You've got to choose between us
You just can't have the two of us
Make your fickle mind up
I won't stay while you enjoy
Best of both worlds...

Hilde Hildebrand - Liebe ist ein Geheimnis

Hilde can be heard singing Liebe ist ein Geheimnis in "Die Englische Heirat" (1934).

Ill-fated actress Renate Müller, who can be seen dancing to it in the same film, also recorded a version of this tango.

edit: A kind soul uploaded the whole scene on youtube. Renate appears at 3:06.

Frank Munn - Lady Divine

Lady Divine is the theme song for 1929 silent film "The Divine Lady". Composed by Nat Shilkret and sung by tenor Frank Munn. There's not much information available on Frank Munn but I managed to find Frank's obituary on Time magazine online, which helps getting a better picture of who he was.

Visit the blog Vitaphone Varieties for plenty of information on old movie soundtracks.

Years of desire and wanting
Days that no pleasure knew
Love, dreams and fancy taunting
And then at last I found you

The rose of love soft caressing
Your lips, oh lady divine
My heart ? confessing
With hope is whispering today

Your eyes, your smile find me longing
To draw your breast to mine
?
And hear you saying you are my lady divine

The Carpenters - Superstar

baby baby baby baby, oh baby
The Carpenters sure were cheesy.

and here's an interesting cover by Sonic Youth :

long ago
and oh so far away
I fell in love with you
before the second show
your guitar
it sounds so sweet and clear
but you're not really there
it's just the radio

don't you remember you told me you loved me baby
you said you'd be coming back this way again baby
baby baby baby baby oh baby
I love you, I really do

loneliness, is such a sad affair
and I can hardly wait
to be with you again
what to say
to make you come again
come back to me again
and play your sad guitar

don't you remember you told me you loved me baby
you said you'd be coming back this way again baby
baby baby baby baby oh baby
I love you, I really do

don't you remember you told me you loved me baby
you said you'd be coming back this way again baby
baby baby baby baby oh baby
I love you, I really do

Dream City Film Club - If I Die, I Die

Here at cheesylovesongs, we do not wish to hurt sensitive souls. If you really don't like to see dead bunnies & blood, don't watch the video below.

Dream City Film Club was a very underrated band from the 90's - the frontman Michael J. Sheehy is, I believe, still recording. Here's a website if the band interests you : www.dreamcityfilmclub.com

(embedding disabled by youtube, click on the cover)

as I watch you sleeping
gently feel my way
into your dreams love
gently feel my way

you are so beautiful
I'd die to taste your kiss
I would give my (??) dear
for just one hour of bliss with you

they can tear me to pieces
they can break me in two
lover I don't care
as long as I'm with you
I'm not afraid, no
take my chances
and if I die I die

The Vaselines - Son Of a Gun

This song seems to be made for pillowfighting and general bouncing around.

I'm sure everyone knows the famous Nirvana cover- The Vaselines had a few other songs that were covered by Kurt Cobain's grunge gang. The Vaselines were Eugene Kelly & Frances McKee, two dirty-minded Scots who formed the band in 1986. They notably covered Divine's You think you're a man.

Swing swing up and down,
Turn turn turn around,
Round round round and about and over again.
Gun gun son of a gun,
You are the only one, And no one else can take my place.

The sun shines in the bedroom when you play,
And the raining always starts when you go away.

The Beach Boys - Wouldn't it be nice

Wouldn't it be nice, to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
I think that would kick ass. Seriously.

From Pet Sounds ( 1966 )

Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong

You know it's gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together

Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through

Happy times together weve been spending
I wish that every kiss was neverending
Wouldn't it be nice

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true
Baby then there wouldnt be a single thing we couldnt do
We could be married
And then we'd be happy

Wouldn't it be nice

You know it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
But let's talk about it
Wouldn't it be nice

Screaming Lord Sutch - Dracula's Daughter

Happy Halloween!

It was late one night when the moon shone bright
I was passing the cemetery
When a bite on the cheek left me feeling weak
That's where I met vampire Mary

When I looked around I was flat on the ground
With a big black thing above me
Are we gonna get wed or you end up dead
Says now do you love me

Lips of blue, eyes of red
A laugh like gurgling water
But I can't resist that passionate kiss
I'm love with Dracula's daughter

But she gave me a peck
Thus left me a wreck
And said it'll ?
And after that we're gonna meet the old bat
You must come and see my daddy

When we climbed to the tree
And I says can we please pardon my intrusion
Well he gave me a grin and said my you're thin
You could do with a blood transfusion

Lips of blue, eyes of red
A laugh like gurgling water
But I can't resist that passionate kiss
I'm in love with Dracula's daughter

We were wed in June beneath the yellow moon
And we danced around the campfire
Says Mary to me when the clock strikes three
You're a genuine Grade A vampire

Now hear me right if you're out at night
Run as fast as your legs will let you
Cause if you don't run, I'm teeling you son
Mary and I will get you

Lips of blue, eyes of red
A laugh like gurgling water
But I can't resist that passionate kiss
I'm in love with Dracula's daughter

Ginny Arnell - Dumb Head

Ginny Arnell was one of the new American artists left in the wake of British bands. Ginny's song, “Dumb Head”, was catchy and much in the style of female singers of the early 1960's, even using an instrumental passage featuring a kazoo, reminiscent of the 1962 Joanie Sommers hit “Johnny Get Angry”, which successfully used the same effect.

And a cover by Sharades, a 60s girls group, produced by Joe Meek:

Dumb head, I'm a stupid little girl
Just a dumb head
Dodododo-dodo-dododo

I had him where I wanted him
He was saying he'd be mine
And none could take my place
And I laughed in his face

Well, I made some goofs,
But this one tops them all
So I think I'll go
Bang my head against the wall

Cause I'm a dumb head
I'm a stupid little girl
Just a dumb head
Dodododo-dodo-dododo

I had him where I wanted him
He was giving me his heart
And begging me to stay
And I just walked away

Well, now I'm convinced that I must be insane
Or else I was born with a peanut for a brain

Cause I'm a dumb head
I'm a stupid little girl
Just a dumb head
Dodododo-dodo-dododo

I couldn't see the forest through the trees,
The boy I love was down on his knees
And I played the game and acted like a tease,
Somebody kick me please

Cause I'm a dumb head
I'm a stupid little girl
Just a dumb head
Dodododo-dodo-dododo

Now I'm convinced that I must be insane
Or else I was born with a peanut for a brain

Cause I'm a dumb head
I'm a stupid little girl
Just a dumb head
Goofy little girl
Just a dumb head
Silly little girl
Just a dumb head
Stupid little girl
Just a dumb girl
Stupid little girl
Just a dumb head
Silly little girl...

Joanie Sommers - Johnny Get Angry

Yet another Johnny song!
Johnny Get Angry reached 7# on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962.

Johnny, I said we were through
Just to see what you would do
You stood there and hung your head
Made me wish that I were dead

Oh, Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad
Give me the biggest lecture I ever had
I want a brave man, I want a cave man
Johnny, show me that you care, really care for me

Every time you danced with me
You let Freddy cut in constantly
When he'd ask, you'd never speak
Must you always be so meek?

Every girl wants someone who
She can always look up to
You know I love you, of course
Let me know that you're the boss

Johnny, get angry, Johnny
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...

Boris Vian - Fais moi mal, Johnny

Text by french writer Boris Vian, sung by actress/singer Magali Noël in 1956.

The story is as follows. This girl begs Johnny to hurt her, because she likes to play it rough - but Johnny is a good boy and insists he won't hurt a fly. Eventually, as she insults and ridicules him, he gets really angry and beats up his unfortunate lover.

these people obviously had a lot of fun making the video!

Il s'est levé à mon approche
Debout, il était bien plus petit
Je me suis dit c'est dans la poche
Ce mignon-là, c'est pour mon lit
Il m'arrivait jusqu'à l'épaule
Mais il était râblé comme tout
Il m'a suivie jusqu'à ma piaule
Et j'ai crié vas-y mon loup

Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
Envole-moi au ciel... zoum!
Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny

Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
Je ne suis pas une mouche... zoum!
Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny

Tu me fais mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
Pas avec les pieds... zing!
Tu me fais mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny

Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
Envole-moi au ciel... zoum!
Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
Moi j'aime l'amour qui fait boum!

Neil Young - Harvest Moon

1992.

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleeping
We could dream this night away

But theres a full moon rising
Let's go dancin in the light
We know where the music's playing
Let's go out and feel the night

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart

But now it's getting late
And the moon is climbing high
I want to celebrate
See it shining in your eye

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

The Andrews Sisters - Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!

Here's one for all the Johnny boys of the world - you know the type, rebellious, hair full of gel and a leather jacket . They might own a motorcycle or pick fights in bars, which makes them very attractive to girls.

The famous sisters recorded this in 1962, but Glen Miller was first to perform this song with his orchestra in 1938.

I especially like the lines "you make my sad heart jump with joy" and "you're not handsome, it's true".

(Ed Rose / Abe Olman)

Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny!
How you can love
Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny!
Heavens above
You make my sad heart jump with joy
And when you're near I just can't sit still a minute
I'm so, Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny!
Please tell me dear
What makes me love you so?
You're not handsome, it's true
But when I look at you
I just, Oh, Johnny!
Oh, Johnny! Oh!
da-da-da

All the girls are crazy about a certain little lad
Although he's very very bad
He could be oh so good when he wanted to
Bad or good he understood about love & other things
For every girl in town followed him around
just to hold his hand and sing

Oh, Johnny!
Oh, Johnny Johnny!
How you can love
Oh, Johnny!
Oh, Johnny Johnny!
Heavens above, way above
You make my sad heart jump with joy
And when you're near I just can't sit still another minute
Oh, Johnny!
Oh, Johnny Johnny!
Please tell me dear
What makes me love you so?
You're not handsome, it is true
But when I look at you
I just, Oh, Johnny Johnny Johnny! My!
da-da-da

Johnny, Oh! Johnny, Oh!
Johnny, Oh! Johnny, Oh!
Johnny, Oh! Johnny, Oh!
Johnny, Oh! Johnny, Oh!

Oh Johnny! Please tell me dear
What makes me love you so?
You're not handsome it is true
But when I look at you
I just, Oh, Johnny!

Bo Diddley - Who Do You Love?

A 1956 song by the huge Bo Diddley, who passed away recently. The title of the song "Who do you love" is a pun on hoodoo.

Here's a list of bands that covered it:
The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Band, The Blues Project, The Doors, George Thorogood And The Destroyers, Golden Earring, Juicy Lucy, King Earl Boogie Band, The Meteors, The Misunderstood, Patti Smith, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Ronnie Hawkins, Tom Rush, Townes Van Zandt, UFO, The Woolies and Cross Canadian Ragweed. (according to wikipedia)

The ice-wagon mentioned in the song is most likely slang for a hearse.

Bo Diddley recorded "Who Do You Love" with Los Lobos for the "La Bamba" soundtrack. (That's Ritchie Valens in the picture below.)

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire,
I use a cobra-snake for a necktie,
I got a brand new house on the roadside,
Made from rattlesnake hide,
I got a brand new chimney made on top,
Made out of a human skull,
Now come on take a walk with me, Arlene,
And tell me, who do you love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Tombstone hand and a graveyard mind,
Just 22 and I don’t mind dying.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I rode around the town, use a rattlesnake whip,
Take it easy arlene, don’t give me no lip,

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Night was dark, but the sky was blue,
Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew,
Heard a bump, and somebody screamed,
You should have heard just what I seen.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Arlene took me by my hand,
And she said ooowee bo, you know I understand.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Judy Garland - Dear Mr Gable (You Made Me Love You)

This is a lovely clip from Broadway Melody of 1938 (1937) and Judy Garland was 15 here.
The song is based on a popular song called "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want To Do It)" (music by James V. Monaco, lyrics by Joseph McCarthy), first published in 1913. Judy got her part on Broadway Melody of 1938 after she sang it to Clark Gable at his birthday party. The aditional lyrics concerning Mr Gable were added by Roger Edens.

Dear Mr. Gable
I am writing this to you
And I hope that you will read it so you'll know
My heart beats like a hammer
And I stutter and I stammer
Every time I see you at the picture show
I guess I'm just another fan of yours
And I thought I'd write and tell you so

You made me love you
I didn't wanna do it
I didn't wanna do it
You made me love you
And all the time you knew it
I guess you always knew it
You made me happy
Sometimes you made me glad
But there were times, sir
You made me feel so sad
You made me sigh, 'cause
I didn't wanna tell you
I didn't wanna tell you
I think you're grand, that's true
Yes, I do, 'deed I do, you know I do
I must tell you what I'm feeling
The very mention of your name
Sends my heart reeling
You know you made me love you!

Aw, gee, Mr. Gable
I don't wanna bother you!
Guess you got a lotta girls
That tell you the same thing
And if you don't wanna read this
Well, you don't have to
But I just had to tell you about the time
I saw you in "It Happened One Night,"
That was the first time I ever saw you
And I knew right then you were
The nicest fella in the movies!
I guess it was 'cause you acted so, well
So natural like - not like a real actor at all
But just like any fella you'd meet at school or at a party
Then one time I saw you in a picture
With Joan Crawford
And I had to cry a little, 'cause
You loved her so much and you couldn't have her
Not till the end of the picture, anyway

And then one time I saw you in person
You were making a personal appearance at the theatre
And I was standing there when you got out of your car
And you almost knocked me down!
Oh - but it wasn't your fault!
Naw, I was in the way
But you looked at me, and you smiled
Yeah! You smiled right at me as if you meant it
And I cried all the way home
Just 'cause you smiled at me for being in your way!
Aw, I'll never forget it, Mr. Gable
Honest, you're my favorite actor!

I don't care what happens
Let the whole world stop
As far as I'm concerned
You'll always be the top
'Cause you know you made me love you!

David Bowie - Be My Wife

Sometimes you get so lonely
Sometimes you get nowhere
I've lived all over the world
I've left every place

Please be mine
Share my life
Stay with me
Be my wife

Sometimes you get so lonely
Sometimes you get nowhere
I've lived all over the world
I've left every place

Please be mine
Share my life
Stay with me
Be my wife

Sometimes you get so lonely

Saint Etienne - Kiss and Make Up

I was searching for the original of this song by the Field Mice on Youtube when I stumbled across this cover. I think it's not bad, and I like the video.

Without beforehand thinking
sometimes I say things
I could never hate you
I could never hate you

I do not mean one
word of what I say
I don't hate you
I don't, I do not

Let's kiss and make up
let's kiss and make up
Let's you and I
kiss and make up
Let's kiss and make up
let's kiss and make up
Let's you and I
kiss and make up

Without beforehand thinking
sometimes I say things
I could never hate you
I could never hate you

I do not mean one
word of what I say
I don't hate you
I love you

Let's kiss and make up
let's kiss and make up
Let's you and I
kiss and make up
Let's kiss and make up
let's kiss and make up
Let's you and I
kiss and make up

The Shaggs - You're Something Special to Me

The Shaggs were an American all-female rock group formed in Fremont, New Hampshire in 1968. The band was composed of sisters Dorothy "Dot" Wiggin (vocals/lead guitar), Betty Wiggin (vocals/rhythm guitar), Helen Wiggin (drums), and later Rachel Wiggin (bass).

The conceptual beginning of The Shaggs came from Austin Wiggin, Jr.'s mother. During Austin's youth she had predicted during a palmreading that he would marry a strawberry blonde woman, that he would have two sons after she had died, and that his daughters would form a popular music group. The first two predictions came true, so Austin set about making the third come true. Austin withdrew his daughters from school, bought them instruments, and arranged for them to receive music and vocal lessons.

- wikipedia

Lyrics are incomplete... I couldn't figure them all out, so if you want to have a go, be my guest!

you're something special to me
though others think you're not so grand
I still say you're quite the man

oh you're something special to me
when I hear your voice I know
you're the one that makes me go:
"you're something special to me"

when I see your face it shows
there's no place I'd rather go
than to be with you, so
you're something special to me

when you smile at me my ???
you make me see how happy I can be
you're something special to me

please don't speak unkind words to me
that would make me unhappy

how I want to tell you what you mean to me
I think you're the greatest guy I've ever seen

you're something special to me
oh, you're something special to me

Blind Willie McTell - Searching the Desert for the Blues

"you make me feel like cryin' when you talk like that"
"sure enough, that's too bad baby"

William Samuel "Blind Willie" McTell recorded 149 songs between 1927 and 1956. This one's from 1932.

You may search the ocean, you might go 'cross the deep blue sea
But Mama, you'll never find another hot shot like me

I followed my baby from the station to the train
And the blues came down like (???) rain

I left her at the station wringing her hands and crying
I told her she had a home, just as long as I had mine

I've got two women, and you can't tell them apart
I've got one in my bosom, the other one in my heart

The one in my bosom, she's in Tennessee
And the one in my heart, don't even give a darn for me

I used to say a married woman was the sweetest woman that was ever born
But I've changed that thing, you better let married women alone

Take my advice: let these married women be
'Cause their husbands'll grab you, beat you ragged as a cedar tree

When a woman say she love you 'bout good as she do herself,
I don't pay her no attention, tell that same line to somebody else

I really don't believe no woman in the whole round world do right,
act like an angel in the daytime, mess by the ditch at night

I'm going, pretty mama, please don't break this rule;
that's why I'm searching these deserts for the blues

I'm going, pretty mama, searching these deserts now
That's why I'm walking my baby home anyhow

Lord, oh Lord
Lordy, Lordy, Lord
Oh Lordy Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord

When a woman say she love you 'bout good as she do herself,
I don't pay her no attention, tell that same line to somebody else

Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord

Tonight You Belong To Me

This popular american song, written in 1926 by Billy Rose and Lee David, was a hit for Gene Austin in 1927.

In 1956, a new version with shorter lyrics was recorded by Lawrence Welk and The Lennon Sisters, reaching #15 on the Billboard charts in September.

Another delightful cover was made in the same year, by sister singing duo Patience and Prudence, who were, respectively, 14 and 11 years old. It charted #4, also in September.

I know (I know)
You belong to somebody new
But Tonight you belong to me
Although (although) we're apart
You're part of my heart
And tonight you belong to me

Way down by the stream
How sweet it will seem
Once more just to dream
In the moonlight
My honey I know (I know)
With the dawn that you will be gone
But tonight you belong to me

Way down, way down along the stream
How very, very sweet it will seem
Once more just to dream
In the silvery moonlight
My honey, I know (I know)
With the dawn that you will be gone
But tonight you belong to me
Just to little old me

Sunny and the Sunliners - Sharing You

This is the sound of a heart breaking!

I didn't find any information on this particular song, which means the lyrics might be wrong and any help is welcome.
Sunny and the Sunliners, Sunny Ozuna's band, were formerly known as Sunny and the Sunglows.

I'm guessing this is a 60s song, from the little information I found on the band.

edit:
Plantsmantx said...
I know of at least three other versions of this song, all from the 60's. It was also recorded by Mitty Collier snd Johnny Adams, which were both quite bluesy, but the version I remember best from when I was a child in the mid-60's was done by....uh, I can't remember his name, but his version was more like the typical teen soul ballad of the time.

I don't know why I love you like I do
I don't know why I need you like I do
I must be going crazy to fool myself
But I know you belong to someone else

And I'm sharing you, Lord sharing you
This I know, this I know baby

I know you'll marry
Belong to someone else
I hope he finds it in his heart
To forgive me
I can't help myself
Cause if you love me like you say you do
Then leave him, leave him

Leave him right now
Leave him right now baby

I can't go on living on promises and tomorrows
Lord when I can easily have someone else
Get a true love
Baby I'll find someone of mine,
Someone of mine baby

All the love I have to share has come to despair
They say that if I keep on pushing I'll begin to show
But show, show won't make me much
So leave him, leave him

You just won't leave him
Leave him right now baby
You just won't, no you just won't...

Chuck Berry - Sweet Little Sixteen

A song I'm sure you all know - here's a late (1972) live version.
Check out that knee action! Not bad for an old guy.

They're really rockin' in Boston, in Pittsburgh, PA.
Deep in the heart of Texas, an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay.
All over Saint Louie, an' down in New Orleans.
All the cats wanna dance with Sweet Little Sixteen.

Sweet Little Sixteen, she's just got to have,
About half a million famed autographs.
Her wallet filled with pictures she gets them one by one
Becomes so excited, watch her, look at her run, boy.

"Oh, mommy, mommy, Please may I go?
It's such a sight to see somebody steal the show."
"Oh, daddy, daddy, I beg of you,
Whisper to mommy, It's alright with you."

'Cause they'll be rockin' on Bandstand, in Philadelphia, PA.
Deep in the heart of Texas an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay.
All over Saint Louie, way down in New Orleans.
All the cats wanna dance with Sweet Little Sixteen.

[ Instrumental break. ]

'Cause they'll be rockin' on Bandstand, Philadelphia, PA.
Deep in the heart of Texas, an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay
All over Saint Louie, way down in New Orleans.
All the cats wanna dance with (oo!) Sweet Little Sixteen.

Sweet Little Sixteen, she's got the grown-up blues.
Tight dresses an' lipstick, she's sportin' high-heel shoes.
Oh, but tomorrow mornin' she'll have to change her trend.
And be sweet sixteen an' back in class again.

Well the'll be rockin' in Boston, Pittsburgh, PA.
Deep in the heart of Texas, an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay.
Way out in Saint Louie, way down in New Orleans.
All the cats wanna dance with Sweet Little Sixteen.

Iggy Pop - Sixteen

The only song on Lust for Life entirely written by Iggy Pop. 1977.

Sweet 16 in leather boots
Body and soul, I go crazy
Baby, baby I'm a hungry, sweet 16
Funky bar all full of faces
Pretty faces, beautiful faces
Body and soul, body and soul
I give to you
I am an easy mark with my broken heart
Sweet 16
Show you my explosion, sweet 16
Go out to the funky bar
I get hurt, crying inside
'Cause everybody's so fine
And they don't need me.
Tell me what can I do, sweet 16
I give you my body and soul sweet 16
I must be hungry 'cause I go crazy
Over your leather boots
Now baby I know...
That's not normal
But I love you, I love you
I love you, sweet 16

Billy Idol - Sweet Sixteen

Ed Leedskalnin's Coral Castle, a mysterious construction in Florida, served as inspiration for this 1986 song. The lyrics constantly refer to it.
"Sweet Sixteen" is how Edward referred to his 16 year-old fiancée Agnes Scuffs, who broke the engagement the night before their wedding and for whom the castle was built, single-handedly, by Edward .

A picture of Leedskalnin can be seen in the beginning of the video.

Another version of the video was recorded at the Coral Castle:

I'll do anything
For my sweet sixteen,
And I'll do anything
For little run away child

Gave my heart an engagement ring,
She took ev'rything,
Ev'rything I gave her,
Oh sweet sixteen

Built a moon
For a rocking chair,
I never guessed it would
Rock her far from here
Oh, oh, oh.

Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen
Someone's built a candy brain
And filled it in.

Well I'll do anything
For my sweet sixteen
Oh I'll do anything
For little runaway child

Well, memories may burn you,
Memories grow older as people can
They just get colder
Like sweet sixteen

I see it's clear
Baby, that you are
All through here
Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen
Someone's built a candy house
To house her in.
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen
Someone's built a candy brain
And filled it in.

And I do anything
For my sweet sixteen
Oh, I do anything
For run away girl.

Yeah, sad and lonely and blue.
Yeah, gettin' over you.
How, how do you think it feels
Yeah to get up in the morning, get over you.
Up in the morning, get over you.
Wipe away the tears, get over you, get over, get over...

My sweet sixteen,
Oh runaway child
Oh sweet sixteen
Little runaway girl.

Gave my heart an engagement ring,
She left everything,
Everything I gave her,
Oh sweet sixteen
Built a moon
For a rocking chair,
I never guessed it would
Rock her far from here
Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen
Someone's built a candy house
And house her in.
Someone's built a candy castle
For my sweet sixteen
Someone's built a candy house
And house her in.

And I'll do anything
For my sweet sixteen
Oh, I'll do anything
For little runaway child

Do anything
For my sweet sixteen
I'll do anything
For little runaway girl
Little runaway girl
Oh sweet sixteen
Oh sweet sixteen
Oh

Johnny Burnette - Little Boy Sad

Released in 1961 and later covered by Herman's Hermits.

You've been lyin', been untrue
Now they call me Little Boy Blue
Someday, baby, you're gonna find
Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine

You've been cheatin', doin' me bad
Now they call me Little Boy Sad
Someday, baby, you're gonna see
Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as me

Little Boy Blue, that's my name
Little Boy Sad, you're to blame

You've been sneakin', doin' me dirt
Now they call me Little Boy Hurt
Someday, baby, you're gonna find
Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine

Wanda Jackson - I Gotta Know

This was the first hit for the Queen of Rockabilly, in 1956.
Wanda Jackson is still alive and rockin, having performed on August 2007 on Elvis and more, the 30th Memorial Concert dedicated to Elvis Presley, whom she dated. Elvis strongly encouraged her to abandon the gospel/country style and move towards rock n' roll.

Well I thought that you were a wantin' romance
But all you ever do is dance dance dance
So I boppity bop the whole night long to the knocked out music of a jukebox song
One thing I gotta know I gotta know I gotta know
If our love's the real thing where's my weddin' ring

Yes we rocked and rolled till the broad daylight
You're a little too pooped to kiss your baby goodnight
I know you've had it when the rockin' is through
So I let you go home what else could I do
One thing I gotta know ...

Well I thought that you were a wantin' romance...

When you're on that floor you're cool man cool
But when it comes to lovin' you need to go to school
You know I'm longin' for a weddin' day but all you ever do is play boy play
One thing I gotta know ...

Dion - Runaround Sue

Okay, what's up with this Sue/Suzie character?
All the songs are about her.

Here's my story, its sad but true
It's about a girl that I once knew
She took my love then ran around
With every single guy in town

Ah, I should have known it from the very start
This girl will leave me with a broken heart
Now listen people what I'm telling you
A-keep away from-a Runaround Sue

I miss her lips and the smile on her face
The touch of her hair and this girl's warm embrace
So if you don't wanna cry like I do
A-keep away from-a Runaround Sue

Ah, she likes to travel around
She'll love you but she'll put you down
Now people let me put you wise
Sue goes out with other guys
Here's the moral and the story from the guy who knows
I fell in love and my love still grows
Ask any fool that she ever knew, they'll say
Keep away from-a Runaround Sue

Yeah, keep away from this girl
I know know what she'll do
Keep away from sue

She likes to travel around
She'll love you but she'll put you down
Now people let me put you wise
Sue goes out with other guys
Here's the moral and the story from the guy who knows
I fell in love and my love still grows
Ask any fool that she ever knew, they'll say
Keep away from-a Runaround Sue

Ritchie Valens - That's my little Suzie

I hesitated between this and "rockin' all night"... It's also a good song.
This video seems to be made from parts of the movie "La Bamba" which related Ritchie's life.

Well, I got a gal named Sue
She knows just what to do
She's just a-rockin'
She knows what to do

She knows how to love me
And rock it, too
That's my little Suzie
She knows what to do

She rocks to the left
And she rocks to the right
She rocks all day
And she rocks all night
When my baby gets tired a-me
I'm gonna drown myself in a sea

Well, come on let's go little Suzie
Tell me you'll be true
If I shoud lose you
Oh, what could I do?

(Ritchie - guitar solo & instrumental)

She rocks to the left
And she rocks to the right
She rocks all day
And she rocks all night
When my baby gets tired a-me
I'm gonna drown myself in a sea

Well, come on let's go little Suzie
Tell me you'll be true
If I shoud lose you
Oh, what could I do?

Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

And now... a popstar who, unlike the previous ones, is more alive than dead...
Pete Burns in Dead or Alive, singing "You Spin me Round (Like a Record)".
According to Pete, the eye patch was a clever idea to distract people from his recent nose job.

Very catchy and danceable hit from 1985.

I want your lo-o-o-o-oooove

Yeah I, I got to know your name
Well and I, could trace your private number baby
All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your lovin' arms
I want some

Well I...I set my sights on you
(and no one else will do)
And I, I've got to have my way now, baby
(and no one else will do)
And I, I've got to have my way now, baby
All I know is that to me
You look like you're havin' fun
Open up your lovin' arms
Watch out, here I come

*You spin me right round, baby
right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I, I got be your friend now, baby
And I would like to move in
Just a little bit closer
(little bit closer)

**All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your lovin' arms
Watch out, here I come

[*Repeat]

I want your love
I want your love
[**Repeat]

Elvis Presley - The girl of my best friend

ELVIS LIVES!

Well, through his songs anyways. This one deals with a popular subject- a case of everyday drama. The album Elvis Is Back! on which the song appeared
was #2 on the Top Pop Albums chart in 1960.

and yet ANOTHER 60's song...

Note : If you have seen Elvis, please report to this website.

(words & music by Beverly
Ross - Sam Bobrick)

The way she walks,
The way she talks
How long can I pretend
Oh I can't help I'm in love
With the girl of my best friend

Her lovely hair,
Her skin so fair
I could go on and never end
Oh, I can't help I'm in love
With the girl of my best friend

I want to tell her
How I love her so
And hold her in my arms, but then
What if she got real mad
and told him so
I could never face either one again

The way they kiss
Their happiness
Will my aching heart ever mend
Or will I always be in love
With the girl of my best friend?

Never end,
Will it ever end?
Please let it end

Buddy Holly - Love is Strange

This is actually a cover, the original was performed by Mickey & Silvia (see below)in 1957. This song appeared on Charles Hardin "Buddy" Holley's last album, Giant, issued 10 years after his tragic death in a plane crash. The album was put together using tapes brought in by Buddy's parents which were then transferred to a multi-track recorder.

Love
love is strange
many people
take it for a game
once you've had it
you're in an awful fix
'cos when you've had it
you never want to quit

many people
they don't understand
they think love
is money in their hand
but your sweet love
is better than a kiss
and when you leave me
those kisses I will miss

Love, mmmm
love is strange
many people, mmmm
take it for a game
once you've had it, mmmm
you're in an awful fix
'cos when you've had it
you never want to quit

many people, mmmm
they don't understand
they think love, mmmm
is money in their hand
but your sweet loving, mmmm
is better than a kiss
and when you leave me, mmmm
those kisses I will miss

those kisses I will miss
those kisses I will miss

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne

The lyrics for this 1967 song first appeared as a poem entitled Suzanne Takes You Down on Cohen's 1966 book Parasites Of Heaven.

Leonard Cohen specified, notably in a BBC interview, that the song was about encountering Suzanne Verdal, the wife of sculptor Armand Vaillancourt, in a Montreal setting. (...)
She is now homeless in Venice Beach, California, USA, where she lives in her automobile. Verdal claims that she and Cohen never had sexual relations, contrary to what some interpretations of the song suggest. Cohen himself stated in a 1994 BBC interview that he only imagined having sex with her, as there was neither the opportunity nor inclination to actually go through with it. She says she has met Cohen twice since the song's initial popularity; once after a concert Cohen performed in the 1970s and once in passing in the 1990s where Cohen did not speak to her (and possibly did not recognise her).
- wikipedia

Click here for a 1998 interview with Suzanne Verdal about this song.

Covered by Judy Collins, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and many others.

This is Françoise Hardy's french version of it. (lyrics, which remain rather faithful to the original, can be found here)

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind

Inceste de citron
Lemon incest
Je t’aime t’aime, je t’aime plus que tout
Papapappa
Naïve comme une toile du Nierdoi Sseaurou
Tes baisers sont si doux
Inceste de citron
Lemon incest
Je t’aime t’aime, je t’aime plus que tout
Papapappa
L’amour que nous n’ f’rons jamais ensemble
Est le plus beau le rare le plus troublant
Le plus pur le plus enivrant
Exquise esquisse
Délicieuse enfant
Ma chair et mon sang
Oh mon bébé mon âme
