Today's the 50th anniversary of "the day the music died", that tragic day when buddy holly, ritchie valence & big bopper's little plane came crashing down, plunging the fans in an ocean of sorrow... especially this one.
oh, gu-huh-irl on my ma-hi-hi-ind...
Oh, girl on my mind please come back to me I love you with all my heart with you I want to be
I want you to be near me is that too much to ask girl on my mind please say you will be mine
You're the one and the only you are mine to have and to love no one could ask for more you're mine to adore
Today, CLS will help you clumsy kids with what to do on a date. Mind you, it's not all about bling-bling and heavy petting. Success or your money back!
Text by french writer Boris Vian, sung by actress/singer Magali Noël in 1956.
The story is as follows. This girl begs Johnny to hurt her, because she likes to play it rough - but Johnny is a good boy and insists he won't hurt a fly. Eventually, as she insults and ridicules him, he gets really angry and beats up his unfortunate lover.
these people obviously had a lot of fun making the video!
A 1956 song by the huge Bo Diddley, who passed away recently. The title of the song "Who do you love" is a pun on hoodoo.
Here's a list of bands that covered it: The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Band, The Blues Project, The Doors, George Thorogood And The Destroyers, Golden Earring, Juicy Lucy, King Earl Boogie Band, The Meteors, The Misunderstood, Patti Smith, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Ronnie Hawkins, Tom Rush, Townes Van Zandt, UFO, The Woolies and Cross Canadian Ragweed. (according to wikipedia)
The ice-wagon mentioned in the song is most likely slang for a hearse.
Bo Diddley recorded "Who Do You Love" with Los Lobos for the "La Bamba" soundtrack. (That's Ritchie Valens in the picture below.)
I walk 47 miles of barbed wire, I use a cobra-snake for a necktie, I got a brand new house on the roadside, Made from rattlesnake hide, I got a brand new chimney made on top, Made out of a human skull, Now come on take a walk with me, Arlene, And tell me, who do you love?
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
Tombstone hand and a graveyard mind, Just 22 and I don’t mind dying.
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
I rode around the town, use a rattlesnake whip, Take it easy arlene, don’t give me no lip,
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
Night was dark, but the sky was blue, Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew, Heard a bump, and somebody screamed, You should have heard just what I seen.
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
Arlene took me by my hand, And she said ooowee bo, you know I understand.
Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
A song I'm sure you all know - here's a late (1972) live version. Check out that knee action! Not bad for an old guy.
They're really rockin' in Boston, in Pittsburgh, PA. Deep in the heart of Texas, an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay. All over Saint Louie, an' down in New Orleans. All the cats wanna dance with Sweet Little Sixteen.
Sweet Little Sixteen, she's just got to have, About half a million famed autographs. Her wallet filled with pictures she gets them one by one Becomes so excited, watch her, look at her run, boy.
"Oh, mommy, mommy, Please may I go? It's such a sight to see somebody steal the show." "Oh, daddy, daddy, I beg of you, Whisper to mommy, It's alright with you."
'Cause they'll be rockin' on Bandstand, in Philadelphia, PA. Deep in the heart of Texas an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay. All over Saint Louie, way down in New Orleans. All the cats wanna dance with Sweet Little Sixteen.
[ Instrumental break. ]
'Cause they'll be rockin' on Bandstand, Philadelphia, PA. Deep in the heart of Texas, an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay All over Saint Louie, way down in New Orleans. All the cats wanna dance with (oo!) Sweet Little Sixteen.
Sweet Little Sixteen, she's got the grown-up blues. Tight dresses an' lipstick, she's sportin' high-heel shoes. Oh, but tomorrow mornin' she'll have to change her trend. And be sweet sixteen an' back in class again.
Well the'll be rockin' in Boston, Pittsburgh, PA. Deep in the heart of Texas, an' 'round the 'Frisco Bay. Way out in Saint Louie, way down in New Orleans. All the cats wanna dance with Sweet Little Sixteen.
This was the first hit for the Queen of Rockabilly, in 1956. Wanda Jackson is still alive and rockin, having performed on August 2007 on Elvis and more, the 30th Memorial Concert dedicated to Elvis Presley, whom she dated. Elvis strongly encouraged her to abandon the gospel/country style and move towards rock n' roll.
Well I thought that you were a wantin' romance But all you ever do is dance dance dance So I boppity bop the whole night long to the knocked out music of a jukebox song One thing I gotta know I gotta know I gotta know If our love's the real thing where's my weddin' ring
Yes we rocked and rolled till the broad daylight You're a little too pooped to kiss your baby goodnight I know you've had it when the rockin' is through So I let you go home what else could I do One thing I gotta know ...
Well I thought that you were a wantin' romance...
When you're on that floor you're cool man cool But when it comes to lovin' you need to go to school You know I'm longin' for a weddin' day but all you ever do is play boy play One thing I gotta know ...
I hesitated between this and "rockin' all night"... It's also a good song. This video seems to be made from parts of the movie "La Bamba" which related Ritchie's life.
Well, I got a gal named Sue She knows just what to do She's just a-rockin' She knows what to do
She knows how to love me And rock it, too That's my little Suzie She knows what to do
She rocks to the left And she rocks to the right She rocks all day And she rocks all night When my baby gets tired a-me I'm gonna drown myself in a sea
Well, come on let's go little Suzie Tell me you'll be true If I shoud lose you Oh, what could I do?
(Ritchie - guitar solo & instrumental)
She rocks to the left And she rocks to the right She rocks all day And she rocks all night When my baby gets tired a-me I'm gonna drown myself in a sea
Well, come on let's go little Suzie Tell me you'll be true If I shoud lose you Oh, what could I do?
This is actually a cover, the original was performed by Mickey & Silvia (see below)in 1957. This song appeared on Charles Hardin "Buddy" Holley's last album, Giant, issued 10 years after his tragic death in a plane crash. The album was put together using tapes brought in by Buddy's parents which were then transferred to a multi-track recorder.
Love love is strange many people take it for a game once you've had it you're in an awful fix 'cos when you've had it you never want to quit
many people they don't understand they think love is money in their hand but your sweet love is better than a kiss and when you leave me those kisses I will miss
Love, mmmm love is strange many people, mmmm take it for a game once you've had it, mmmm you're in an awful fix 'cos when you've had it you never want to quit
many people, mmmm they don't understand they think love, mmmm is money in their hand but your sweet loving, mmmm is better than a kiss and when you leave me, mmmm those kisses I will miss
1959 hit single who doesn't love eccentric, wealthy men?
Now I've got a guy and his name is Dooley He's my guy and I love him truly He's not good lookin', heaven knows But I'm wild about his crazy clothes
He wears tan shoes with pink shoelaces A polka dot vest and man, oh, man Tan shoes with pink shoelaces And a big Panama with a purple hat band
ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh
He takes me deep-sea fishing in a submarine We got to drive-in movies in a limousine He's got a whirly-birdy and a 12-foot yacht Ah, but thats-a not all he's got
He's got tan shoes with pink shoelaces A polka dot vest and man, oh, man Tan shoes with pink shoelaces And a big Panama with a purple hat band
Now Dooley had a feelin' we were goin' to war So he went out and enlisted in a fightin' corps But he landed in the brig for raisin' such a storm When they tried to put 'em in a uniform
He wanted tan shoes with pink shoelaces A polka dot vest and man, oh, man He wanted tan shoes with pink shoelaces And a big Panama with a purple hat band
ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh
Now one day Dooley started feelin' sick And he decided that he better make his will out quick He said "Just before the angels come to carry me I want it down in writin' how to bury me."
A'wearin tan shoes with pink shoelaces A polka dot vest and man, oh, man Give me tan shoes with pink shoelaces And a big Panama with a purple hat band
I think I already posted something by Frankie Lymon... but.. I like his voice, and the lyrics to this song.
The Teenagers' first single, 1956's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", was also their biggest. After Lymon went solo in mid-1957, both his career and those of the Teenagers fell into decline. Lymon eventually fell into heroin addiction, and died in 1968 at the age of 25. (wikipedia)
Fame, fatal fame...it can play hideous tricks on the brain.

Written by for Elvis Presley, in 1956, this song is sung to the tune of "Aura Lee" / "Aura Lea", a sentimental Civil War ballad with music by George R. Poulton and words by W.W. Fosdick. Love Me Tender is credited to Elvis Presley and Vera Matson (Ken Darby's wife) due to royalty issues.
"Aura Lee" was published in 1861 and this Civil War song later became popular with college glee clubs and barbershop quartets. It was also sung at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. (wikipedia)
Aura Lee by Jim Reeves :
Love me tender, Love me sweet, Never let me go. You have made my life complete, And I love you so.
Love me tender, Love me true, All my dreams fulfilled. For my darlin I love you, And I always will.
Love me tender, Love me long, Take me to your heart. For its there that I belong, And well never part.
Love me tender, Love me dear, Tell me you are mine. Ill be yours through all the years, Till the end of time.
(when at last my dreams come true Darling this I know Happiness will follow you Everywhere you go)
Aura Lee :
As the blackbird in the spring 'neath the willow tree sat and piped I heard him sing praising Aura Lee.
Aura Lee! Aura Lee! Maid of golden hair sunshine came along with thee and swall-ows in the air. Take my heart and take my ring I give my all to thee take me for eternity dearest Aura Lee!
Aura Lee ! Aura Lee . . .
In her blush the rose was born 'twas music when she spoke in her eyes the light of morn sparkling seemed to break.
Aura Lee! Aura Lee . . .
Aura Lee the bird may flee the willow' golden hair then the wintry winds may be blowing ev'rywhere. Yet if thy blue eyes I see gloom will soon depart for to me sweet Aura Lee is sunshine to the heart.
Why do birds sing so gay And lovers await the break of day Why do they fall in love Why does the rain Fall from up above Why do fools fall in love Why do they fall in love
Love is a losing game Love can be a shame I know of a fool you see For that fool is me Tell my why Tell me why
Why do birds sing so gay And lovers await the break of day Why do they fall in love Why does the rain Fall from up above Why do fools fall in love Why do they fall in love
Why does my heart skip a crazy beat For I know It will reach defeat Tell me why Tell my why Why do fools fall in love
I did my best to find a nice romantic joke online.. you know for the purpose of lightning things up a bit, but came to the conclusion that they're all absolutely terrible.
So, no joke.
As for the song, well, if your self-esteem is low, feel free to sing it in front of a mirror. With my blessing, eh.
The Platters (1955)
It was also recorded by Ringo Starr (1974) (more of a feel-good version)
Only you can make this world seem right Only you can make the darkness bright Only you and you alone can thrill me like you do and fill my heart with love for only you
Only you can make this change in me for it's true, you are my destiny When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do
You're my dream come true my one and only you
Only you can make this change in me for it's true, you are my destiny When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do
I knew I wanted to post a song by Bobby Vee but I didn't know which. Suzie Baby somehow sounds more serious and heartfelt than the others.
It was his first single in 1959.
Suzie baby, where are you? Have you left me for someone new? Is your lovelight shinin' bright? Will you love me or leave me tonight? Suzie baby, don't you know That I love you & want you so? Come back baby, come back home Say you'll love me & never again roam Suzie baby, I love you Say you'll come back & love me too Since you left me, gone away I've been lonely, alone each day Suzie baby, where are you? Have you left me for someone new? Suzie baby, don't you know That I love you & want you so? Someday baby, you'll be blue & you'll wish that you'd die for me too
A beautiful song for the broken-hearted, by Little Anthony & The Imperials, 1958.
Just click and wait for the song to start playing. It will I promise. ;) Please be patient, it doesn't take long.
You don't remember me, but I remember you 't was not so long ago, you broke my heart in two Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you
If we could start anew, I wouldn't hesitate I'd gladly take you back, and tempt the hand of fate Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you,
Love is not a gadget, love is not a toy When you find the one you love, she'll fill your heart with joy
If we could start anew, I wouldn't hesitate I'd gladly take you back, and tempt the hands of fate Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you Oh wo wo wo you you wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
The Belmonts and Dion DiMucci's romantic song celebrating the misfortunes of teenage love.
1959.
Each time we have a quarrel It almost breaks my heart 'Cause I'm so afraid that we will have to part
Each night I ask the stars up above Why must I be a teenager in love
One day I feel so happy Next day I feel so sad I guess I'll learn to take the good with the bad
'Cause each night I ask the stars up above Why must I be a teenager in love
I cried a tear for nobody but you I'll be a lonely one if you should say we're through Well if you want to make me cry That won't be so hard to do If you should say goodbye I'd still go on loving you
Each night I ask the stars up above Why must I be a teenager in love
I cried a tear for nobody but you I'll be a lonely one if you should say we're through Well if you want to make me cry That won't be so hard to do And if you should say goodbye I'd still go on loving you
Each night I ask the stars up above Why must I be a teenager in love Why must I be a teenager in love Why must I be a teenager in love Why must I be a teenager in love
