Antony and The Johnsons - Cripple and the Starfish

The lyrics are marvelous...
plus, I really think this is a song that stands out on it's own.
Proof that romantism is not dead - or whatever makes this song so fabulous.

Mr. Muscle forcing bursting
Stingy thingy into little me, me, me
But just "ripple" said the cripple
As my jaw dropped to the ground
Smile smile

It's true I always wanted love to be
Hurtful
And it's true I always wanted love to be
Filled with pain
And bruises

Yes, so Cripple-Pig was happy
Screamed " I just compeletely love you!
And there's no rhyme or reason
I'm changing like the seasons
Watch! I'll even cut off my finger
It will grow back like a Starfish!
It will grow back like a Starfish!
It will grow back like a Starfish!"

Mr. Muscle, gazing boredly
And he checking time did punch me
And I sighed and bleeded like a windfall
Happy bleedy, happy bruisy

I am very happy
So please hit me
I am very happy
So please hurt me

I am very happy
So please hit me
I am very very happy
So come on hurt me

I'll grow back like a Starfish
I'll grow back like a Starfish
I'll grow back like a Starfish
I'll grow back like a Starfish
Like a Starfish...

Oingo Boingo - Little Girls

This so not romantic!

But, guess what, I could think of a couple of old fashioned cheesy romantic songs but.. I don't feel like posting them! ha

And this song's somewhat about love anyway,
a very special kind of love. :D~

I love little girls they make me feel so good
I love little girls they make me feel so bad
When theyre around they make me feel
Like Im the only guy in town
I love little girls they make me feel so good

They dont care if Im a one way mirror
Theyre not frightened by my cold exterior

They dont ask me questions
They dont want to scold me
They dont look for answers
They just want to hold me
Isnt this fun
Isnt this what lifes all about
Isnt this a dream come true
Isnt this a nightmare too

They dont care about my inclinations
Theyre not frightened by my revelations

Uh oh take a second take
Uh oh its a mistake
Uh oh Im in trouble
Uh oh the little girl was just to little
Too little, too little, too little
Isnt this what lifes all about
Isnt this a dream come true
Isnt this a nightmare too . . .

And I dont care what people say
And I dont care what people think
And I dont care how we look walking down the street

The Cure - Lovesong

This one's for my good friend Z., who by the way, can participate to this blog if she wants to! Actually anyone who considers themselves a romantic fool and loves cheesy love songs may join us. Just let us know.

Robert Smith apparently wrote this for his wife, as a wedding present. 1989.

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

However far away I will always love you
However long I stay I will always love you
Whatever words I say I will always love you
I will always love you

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

However far away I will always love you
However long I stay I will always love you
Whatever words I say I will always love you
I will always love you

Wham! - Last Christmas

Have a cheesy christmas, and don't give your heart to someone who's not special.

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognize me?
Well its been a year it doesnt surprise me
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying I love you
I meant it

Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now
I know you'd fool me again
Chorus
A crowded room,
friends with tired eyes
Im hiding from you
And your soul of ice
My God I thought you were
Someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again
Chorus x2
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover buy you tore him apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special.

The Smiths - Reel Around the Fountain

Okay, another Smiths one,

because, why not?

This is what It May All End Tomorrow has to say about it :

"the lyrics are typical Morrissey; plagiarism (see Sources), unsubtle sexual references, and a deep undercurrent of romanticism.
The way that such a basely puerile a song is presented within a framework of a love song (harmonic slow-tempo balladry) is just excellent; the first time you hear it, you think "what a nice song"; it's only when you listen to the lyrics that you realise that the song is about sexual desire, and nothing more."

So it's not a cheesy love song, but it sounds like one...
I probably should have posted there is a light that never goes ou
t
but I'll stop here with The Smiths for now.

It's time the tales were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
Reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now

Fifteen minutes with you
Well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were virtually dead
And they were so wrong
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were easily led
And they were half-right

It's time that the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old
Oh, reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do

I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said

Two lumps, please
You're the bee's knees
But so am I
Oh, meet me at the fountain
Shove me on the patio
I'll take it slowly
 Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.

Roy Orbison - Crying

And, of course, Roy Orbison. Who's probably the cheesiest singer ever, judging by our blog.

And one of my favourite films, Gummo.
It's the perfect combo. I love this way too much. This song is so painfully romantic, sigh.

I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"
Aww you wished me well, you couldn't tell

That I'd been cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Then you said "so long". left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying, crying cry-i-ing
It's hard to understand but the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I was over you but it's tru-ue, so true
I love you even more than I did before but darling what can I do-o-o-o
For you don't love me and I'll always be

Cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Yes, now you're gone and from this moment on
I'll be crying, crying, crying, cry-i-i-ing
Yeah crying, crying, o-o-o-o-ver you

Billie Holiday - Good Morning Heartache

According to wikipedia, this song was recorded by Billie Holiday on January 1946.
Her voice gives me the chills, especially when I hear her sing Strange Fruit, but that one's not a love song, so...

Good morning heartache
You old gloomy sight
Good morning heartache
Thought we said goodbye last night
I turned and tossed until it seems you have gone
But here you are with the dawn
Wish I forget you, but youre here to stay
It seems I met you
When my love went away
Now everyday I stop Im saying to you
Good morning heartache whats new

Stop haunting me now
Cant shake you nohow
Just leave me alone
Ive got those monday blues
Straight to sunday blues
Good morning heartache
Here we go again
Good morning heartache
Youre the one
Who knows me well
Might as well get use to you hanging around
Good morning heartache
Sit down

ABBA - Lay All Your Love On Me

It was like shooting a sitting duck! Oh my.

This one's from their Super Trouper album, 1980. A big hit.

I wasnt jealous before we met
Now every woman I see is a potential threat
And Im possessive, it isnt nice
Youve heard me saying that smoking was my only vice
But now it isnt true
Now everything is new
And all Ive learned has overturned
I beg of you......

Dont go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me

It was like shooting a sitting duck
A little smalltalk, a smile and baby I was stuck
I still dont know what youve done with me
A grown-up woman should never fall so easily
I feel a kind of fear
When I dont have you near
Unsatisfied, I skip my pride
I beg you dear......

Dont go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me
Dont go sharing your devotion
Lay all your love on me

Ive had a few little love affairs
They didnt last very long and theyve been pretty scarce
I used to think that was sensible
It makes the truth even more incomprehensible
cause everything is new
And everything is you
And all Ive learned has overturned
What can I do......

Dont go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me
Dont go sharing your devotion
Lay all your love on me

Cindy Lauper - I Drove All Night

I said I'd come back to Roy Orbison sometime....

Well, this song was composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and was originally recorded by Roy Orbison in 1987, but was only released on the album King of Hearts in 1992. In the meanwhile it became a hit single for Cindy Lauper in 1989 .
I don't really like the Celine Dion version from 2003 so I'll spare you that.
Somehow I find the lyrics a bit creepy...  there is  a thin line between romantic and stalking. I drove all night to get to you/ Is that alright / I drove all night / Crept in your room  ... That doesn't really sound alright to me, but whatever...

Cindy :

Roy :

I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh, huh

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

What in this world
Keep us from tearing apart
No matter where I go I hear
The beating of your heart
I think about you
When the night is cold and dark
No one can move me
The way that you do
Nothing erases the feeling between me and you

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
I drove all night... to hold you tight

Simon and Garfunkel - For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her

This is a fantastic song, especially if you're in a "winter mood"...

like I am.

What I dream I had, dressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline, of smoky Burgundy
Softer than the rain

I wandered empty streets, down past the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells, tripping down the alley ways
As I walked on

And when you ran to me your cheeks flushed with the night
We walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand

And when I awoke and felt you warm and near
I kissed your honey hair with my grateful tears
Oh I love you, girl

Oh, I love you

The Smiths - Hand in Glove

Nancy's been wanting to post something by Bobby Vee, I've been dying to post something by the Smiths. I decided for hand in glove : the lyrics seem less vague and slightly more cheesy than the others, even though I wouldn't call the song cheesy.
Also, it has a line that states : everything depends upon how near you stand to me.
It was the Smiths' first single, released in 1983.

"If you bought hand in glove, why not buy it again?"

oh, Morrissey...

Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different - because it's us

Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me

And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care

Kiss My Shades

Hand in glove
The Good People laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have

Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care

Kiss My Shades

So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath
If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath

For the Good Life is out there somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer

But I know my luck too well
Yes, I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again

Jefferson Airplane - Triad

And now for something shocking...

...not really. But it is rather unconventional, in fact, it's the only song I know about an actual relationship involving three people. Composed by David Crosby, from The Byrds,
who rejected the song for being too risqué (wikipedia).
Oh well, it was 1968...

You want to know how it will be
Me and him OR you and me
You both stand there your long hair flowing
Your eyes alive your mind still growing
Saying to me--"What can we do now that we both love you",
I love you too-- I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three
You are afraid--embarrassed too
No one has ever said such a thing to you
Your mother's ghost stands at your shoulder
Face like ice--a little bit colder
Saying to you--"you can not do that, it breaks
All the rules you learned in school"
I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three
We love each other--it's plain to see
There's just one answer comes to me
--Sister--lovers--water brothers
And in time--maybe others
So you see--what we can do--is to try something new--
If you're crazy too--
I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three.

Bobby Vee - Suzie Baby

I knew I wanted to post a song by Bobby Vee but I didn't know which. Suzie Baby somehow sounds more serious and heartfelt than the others.

It was his first single in 1959.

Suzie baby, where are you?
Have you left me for someone new?
Is your lovelight shinin' bright?
Will you love me or leave me tonight?
Suzie baby, don't you know
That I love you & want you so?
Come back baby, come back home
Say you'll love me & never again roam
Suzie baby, I love you
Say you'll come back & love me too
Since you left me, gone away
I've been lonely, alone each day
Suzie baby, where are you? Have you left me for someone new?
Suzie baby, don't you know

That I love you & want you so?
Someday baby, you'll be blue & you'll wish that you'd die for me too

David Hasselhoff - Crazy For You

hahaha
You, you can touch a rainbow in the sky
I, I feel as though I've learnt to fly

This is so awful, what a pearl! :)

You- you can say hello to tenderness
I - I can say goodbye to emptiness
We - we will live in happiness
You and I were made for each other
You - you will walk the shores of wonderland
I - I will write "I love you" in the sand
We - we will wander hand in hand
Ev`rybody knows we love each other

I`m crazy for you, you`re crazy for me
You and I belong together, like the sand and sea
I`m crazy for you, you`re crazy for me
I will be forever crazy for you

You - you have made a dream reality
I - I can feel your love surrounding me
we - we will be in ecstasy
You and I were made for each other
You - you will give me love I`ve never had
I - I will never make you sad
We - we will face the good and bad
Ev`rybody knows we love each other

You - you can touch a rainbow in the sky
I - I will feel as though I`ve learnt to fly
We - we can kiss the past goodbye
You and I were made for each other
You - you have found what you`ve been searching for
I - I will never hurt you that`s for sure
We - we will care for evermore
Ev`rybody knows we love each other

I`m crazy for you, you`re crazy for me
You and I belong together, like the sand and sea
I`m crazy for you, you`re crazy for me
I will be forever crazy for you

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Just Like Honey

From their first album Psychocandy, 1985.
Lyrics are love.

Listen to the girl
As she takes on half the world
Moving up and so alive
In her honey dripping beehive
Beehive
It's good, so good, it's so good
So good

Walking back to you
Is the hardest thing that
I can do
That I can do for you
For you

I'll be your plastic toy
I'll be your plastic toy
For you

Eating up the scum
Is the hardest thing for
Me to do

Just like honey (x 17)

Michel Polnareff - Love Me Please, Love Me

A song about unrequited love, on french popstar Michel Polnareff's first album.

1966.

Love me, please love me
Je suis fou de vous
Pourquoi vous moquez-vous chaque jour
De mon pauvre amour?

Si j'en crois votre silence
Vos yeux pleins d'ennui
Nul espoir n'est permis
Pourtant, je veux jouer ma chance
Même si, même si
Je devais y brûler ma vie

Love me, please love me
Je suis fou de vous
Mais vous, vous moquerez-vous toujours
De mon pauvre amour?

Devant tant d'indifférence
Parfois j'ai envie
De me fondre dans la nuit
Au matin je reprends confiance
Je me dis, je me dis
Tout pourrait changer aujourd'hui

Love me, please love me
Je suis fou de vous
Mais vous, vous moquerez-vous toujours
De mes larmes d'amour?

Julee Cruise - Falling

The theme song from Twin Peaks,
composed by Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch
( the lyrics are his!). Vocals by Julee Cruise.
For a second I thought I had to create a "Nifty Nineties" section
but it was released on an album called Floating into the Night
in 1989. Phew, that was close!

don't let yourself be hurt this time
don't let yourself be hurt this time

then i saw your face
then i saw your smile

the sky is still blue
the clouds come and go
yet something is different
are we falling in love?

don't let yourself be hurt this time
don't let yourself be hurt this time

then your kiss so soft
then your touch so warm

the stars still shine bright
the mountains still high
yet something is different
are we falling in love?

falling, falling
falling, falling in love

falling, falling
falling, falling in love

Roxy Music - All I Want is You

L'amour, toujours l'amour...

Which makes me think, I should post songs in french...

A litany of all the credentials which make a man a true gentleman -- etiquette, enunciation, and devil-may-care insouciance -- is swept aside by a supremely swaggering Ferry, because all he wants is you.
(allmusic)

Who cares about etiquette, anyway!

Somebody told me just the other day
That you're leaving me, we're through
Well if you knew how it hurt me so
Then you'd change your mind, I'm sure

Don't want to hear what's going on
I don't care what's new
Don't want to know about anything
cause all I want is you

Going out with other girls
Was always such a bore
But since I fell in love with you
I need you more and more

Don't want to know about one-night-stands
Cut-price souvenirs
All I want is the real thing
And a night that lasts for years
If you ever change your mind
I've a certain cure
An old refrain, it lingers on
L'amour, toujours l´amour...

Don't want to learn about etiquette
From glossy magazines
Why should I try to talk correct
Like they do in another scenes
Say no more about imagery
You're starting to confuse
Just make an offer
Of more romance
Of course I can't refuse
All I want is you
Oo oo i'm all cracked up on you

(1974)

Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon

This one always sounds rather sleazy to me. Mmm... oh nevermind I'm sleepy.
That's why there won't be any fancy mp3 this time.

Neil Diamond, 1967.

cover by Urge Overkill, Pulp Fiction soundtrack, 1994

Love you so much, cant count all the ways
Id die for you girl, and all they can say is
Hes not your kind

They never get tired of puttin me down
And I never know when I come around
What Im gonna find
Dont let them make up your mind
Dont you know

Girl, youll be a woman soon
Please come take my hand
Girl, youll be a woman soon
Soon youll need a man

Ive been misunderstood for all of my life
But what theyre sayin, girl, just cuts like a knife
The boys no good

Well, I finally found what Ive been looking for
But if they get the chance, theyll end it for sure
Sure they would
Baby, Ive done all I could
Its up to you

Girl, youll be a woman soon
Please come take my hand
Girl, youll be a woman soon
Soon youll need a man

Dusty Springfield - I Only Want To Be With You

Damn, those 60s sure were cheesy!

"I Only Want To Be With You" is the first solo single to be released by British singer Dusty Springfield. Recorded while she was still a member of The Springfields, the song was released in November of 1963, three weeks after The Springfields' final concert. It was a popular success, reaching #4 in the British charts, and #12 in the US charts, and was one of the first pre-Beatles hits of the British Invasion of 1964. - wikipedia

and a well known cover by Samantha Fox

I don’t know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never want to let you go
’cause you’ve started something
Oh, can’t you see?
That ever since we met
You’ve had a hold on me
It happens to be true
I only want to be with you

It doesn’t matter where you go or what you do
I want to spend each moment of the day with you
Oh, look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this
It’s crazy but it’s true
I only want to be with you

You stopped and smiled at me
And asked if I’d care to dance
I fell into your open arms
And I didn’t stand a chance
Now listen honey
I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we’re together, honey, I don’t care
’cause you’ve started something
Oh, can’t you see?
That ever since we met
You’ve had a hold on me
No matter what you do
I only want to be with you

Oh, oh, you stopped and you smiled at me
And asked if I’d care to dance
I fell into your open arms
And I didn’t stand a chance
Now hear me tell you
I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we’re together, honey, I don’t care
’cause you’ve started something
Oh, can’t you see?
That ever since we met
You’ve had a hold on me
No matter what you do
I only want to be with you
I said no matter, no matter what you do
I only want to be with you

Brenda Lee - That's All You Gotta Do

Brenda Lee singing her 1960 double sided hit :
That's All You Gotta Do / I'm sorry
Too cute!
Bonus : they film the audience.

That's All You Gotta Do

Anytime you're feeling low
And you got no place to go
You don't have to be blue
Here is all you gotta do
Call me on the telephone
Tell me that you're all alone
And I'll come a runnin' to you
Baby, that's all you gotta do

All you gotta do when you're lonesome
Is to call on me
And I'll come a runnin' to you
As a fast as I can

I'll love and squeeze you
Uh-huh-huh
I'll try to please you
'Cause baby, I want you to be my lovin' man
I've been waiting for the chance
Needing you to start a romance
And if you feel the same way too
Here's all you gotta do

Tell me just a how you feel
Tell me that your love is real
And I'll give my heart to you
Baby, that's all you gotta do

The Beatles - Rocky Raccoon

And now for the obligatory Beatles! There are so many cheesy Beatles songs to chose from, but I always really loved Rocky Raccoon, a pseudo-country ballad with a tragic twist...
Maybe not your typical love song, but it certainly has a love story.
From the white album - 1968.
I could not find a video on Youtube, but here below the player, is a drawing I made about it, and maybe one day I'll make a tiny video/cartoon, if I figure out how...

Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
One day his woman ran off with another guy
Hit young Rocky in the eye
Rocky didn't like that
He said I'm gonna get that boy
So one day he walked into town
Booked himself a room in the local saloon

Rocky Raccoon checked into his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
Rocky had come equipped with a gun
To shoot off the legs of his rival
His rival it seems, had broken his dreams
By stealing the girl of his fancy.
Her name was Magil and she called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy
Now she and her man who called himself Dan
Were in the next room at the hoe down
Rocky burst in and grinning a grin
He said Danny boy this is a showdown
But Daniel was hot-he drew first and shot
And Rocky collapsed in the corner

Now the doctor came in stinking of gin
And proceeded to lie on the table
He said Rocky you met your match
And Rocky said, Doc it's only a scratch
And I'll be better I'll be better doc as soon as I am able.

Now Rocky Raccoon he fell back in his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
A Gideon checked out and he left it no doubt
To help with good Rocky's revival

The Rolling Stones - Angie

The 70s were such a glorious decade. Even Mick Jagger was pretty.

Oh Angie, Oh Angie, when will those dark clouds disappear
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, Angie, you can't say we never tried

Angie, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said goodbye
Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here
Oh, Angie, don't you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain't it time we said good-bye

With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, I still love you, Baby, ev'rywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you come on baby, dry your eyes

But Angie, Angie, ain't it good to be alive
Angie, Angie, they can't say we never tried

Skeeter Davis - The End Of The World

Released in December 1962, this is Skeeter Davis' biggest hit. You may remember it from the film Girl, Interrupted.

Such a melancholic one.

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world,
'Cause you don't love me anymore?

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world.
It ended when I lost your love.

I wake up in the morning and I wonder,
Why everything's the same as it was.
I can't understand. No, I can't understand,
How life goes on the way it does.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world.
It ended when you said goodbye.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world.
It ended when you said goodbye.

Phil Phillips - Sea Of Love

No video for this one...
1959.

Come with me my love
To the sea, the sea of love
I want to tell you
How much I love you

Do you remember when we met
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you

Come with me
To the sea, of love

Do you remember when we met
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you

Come with me
To the sea, of love

Do you remember when we met
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you

The Human League - Louise

I was going to post Love Action(I Believe in Love) instead because the word love is repeated an insane number of times; but Louise has kind of a story...a sad one.
Hmm, nevermind the weird intro.

When he saw her getting of the bus
It seemed to wipe away the years
Her face was older, just a little rough
But her eyes were still so clear
He drank his coffee and he hurried out
Across before she walked away
Then he approached her like a little child
Too scared for what he had to say

Hello, louise,
Remember me?
Now should we part
Or stay awhile?
As if we were still lovers

She took a moment just to recognise the man shed known so well before
And as he started to apologise
Lose any bitterness she bore
She gently put her finger on his lips
To let him know she understood
And with her suitcase standing on the floor
Embraced him like a lover would

He told louise
You look so good
Its just you see
You make me feel
As if we were still lovers

Its not always true that time heals all wounds
There are wounds that you dont wanna heal
The memories of something really good
Something truly real, that you never found again

And though they talked for just a little time
Before she said she had to go
He saw the meeting as a tiny sign
That told him all he had to know

And so louise
Waved from the bus
And as she left
She gave that smile
As if they were still lovers

Paul & Paula - Hey Paula

Paul and Paula are in love but they have to wait for school to be over so they can marry and finally spend the rest of their lives together!

Afterall, true love means waiting.

Sung by Paul & Paula (real names Ray Hildebrand - who also wrote it - and Jill Jackson), 1963.

and here's the audio file with better sound quality:

[Paul:]
Hey, hey Paula, I wanna marry you
Hey, hey Paula, no one else could ever do
I've waited so long for school to be through
Paula, I can't wait no more for you
My love, my love

[Paula:]
Hey Paul, I've been waiting for you
Hey, hey, hey Paul, I want to marry you too
If you love me true, if you love me still
Our love will always be real
My love, my love

[Both:]
True love means planning a life for two
Being together the whole day through
True love means waiting and hoping that soon
Wishes we've made will come true
My love, my love

Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire

Hey little girl is your daddy home...
This is probably the least cheesy song you'll ever find here but...

...I wouldn't be that sure about the video!
I'm crazy about both.
Song starts at 1:06 min but watch the whole thing.

'I'm On Fire' is from Born In The USA, 1985. And this video, directed by John Sayles, won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video in the same year.

Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go away and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
I'm on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
I can take you higher
I'm on fire

Sometimes it's like someone tooh a knife baby
edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley
through the middle of my skull

At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
and a freight train running through the
middle of my head

Only you can cool my desire
I'm on fire

Paul Anka - You Are My Destiny

One of the most powerful love songs ever, written by Paul Anka, released in 1958.

You are my destiny
You share my reverie
You are my happiness
That's what you are

You have my sweet caress
You share my loneliness
You are my dream come true
That's what you are

Heaven and heaven alone
Can take your love from me
'Cause I'd be a fool
To ever leave you dear
And a fool I'd never be

You are my destiny
You share my reverie
You're more than life to me
That's what you are

You are my destiny
You share my reverie
You are my happiness
That's what you are

Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart

Intense song, extravagant video : doves, angels, ninjas, circus people and what appears to be glowing-eyed members of a choir; all of this happening in a church-like building.
According to wikipedia, The meaning behind the video is that Tyler's character (a teacher) is fantasizing about her students.
That would explain all the teenage boys.
Written, edited, composed, and produced by Jim Steinman. A personal favourite.
(1983)

Turn around, every now and then I get a
little bit lonely and you're never coming around
Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by
Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes
Turn around bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit restless and I dream of something wild
Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms
Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit angry and I know I've got to get out and cry
Turn around, Every now and then I get a
little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes
Turn around bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Tears On My Pillow

A beautiful song for the broken-hearted, by Little Anthony & The Imperials, 1958.

Just click and wait for the song to start playing. It will I promise. ;)
Please be patient, it doesn't take long.

You don't remember me, but I remember you
't was not so long ago, you broke my heart in two
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you

If we could start anew, I wouldn't hesitate
I'd gladly take you back, and tempt the hand of fate
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you,

Love is not a gadget, love is not a toy
When you find the one you love, she'll fill your heart with joy

If we could start anew, I wouldn't hesitate
I'd gladly take you back, and tempt the hands of fate
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you
Oh wo wo wo you you
wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Connie Stevens - Sixteen Reasons

This one is pretty cheesy. I like the way she sticks heart-shaped post-its all over the guy...

(One) the way you hold my hand
(Two) your laughing eyes
(Three) the way you understand
(Four) your secret sighs
They're all part of sixteen reasons why I (why I) love you

(Five) the way you comb your hair
(Six) your freckled nose
(Seven) the way you say you care
(Eight) your crazy clothes
That's just half of sixteen reasons why I (why I) love you

(Nine) snuggling in the car
(Ten) your wish upon a star
(Eleven) whispering on the phone
(Twelve) your kiss when we're alone

(Thirteen) the way you thrill my heart
(Fourteen) your voice so neat
(Fifteen) you say we'll never part
(Sixteen) our love's complete
Those are all of sixteen reasons why I (why I) love you

(Sixteen reasons)
Why I (why I) love you

(1961)

10cc - I'm not in Love

no, no...... right.

1975.

I’m not in love, so don’t forget it
It’s just a silly phase I’m going through
And just because I call you up
Don’t get me wrong, don’t think you’ve got it made.
I’m not in love, no no!

It’s because ...

I like to see you, but then again
That doesn’t mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you, don’t make a fuss
Don’t tell your friends about the two of us
I’m not in love, no no!
It’s because ...

Be quiet, Big boys don’t cry, Big boys don’t cry

I keep your picture upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain that’s lying there
So don’t you ask me to give it back
I know you know it doesn’t mean that much to me
I’m not in love, no no!
It’s because

Ooh, you’ll wait a long time for me
Ooh, you’ll wait a long time

I’m not in love, so don’t forget it
It’s just a silly phase I’m going through
And just because I call you up
Don’t get me wrong, don’t think you’ve got it made
I’m not in love, I’m not in love

A Whiter Shade of Pale

Procol Harum, 1967 as well.

trivia: There are more than 200 cover versions of this song!

We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed

But what does it mean?

Two unofficial verses only heard in concert:

She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love
then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed

Nights in White Satin

The Moody Blues.
Perhaps more intense than exactly cheesy? Eh.

From 1967.

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters Ive written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty Id always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore.

cause I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.

Gazing at people,
Some hand in hand,
Just what Im going through
They can understand.

Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end,

And I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.
Oh, how, I love you.

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters Ive written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty Id always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore.

cause I love you,
Yes, I love you,
Oh, how, I love you.
Oh, how, I love you.

Teresa Brewer - Music!Music!Music!

1950.  keep that old Nickelodeon playing!

Put another nickel in
In the nickelodeon
All I want is having you
And music, music, music

I'd do anything for you
Anything you'd want me to
All I want is kissin' you
And music, music, music

Closer, my dear, come closer
The nicest part of any melody
Is when you're dancing close to me

So, put another nickel in
In the nickelodeon
All I want is lovin' you
And music, music, music

Closer, my dear, come closer
The nicest part of any melody
Is when you're dancing close to me

"C'mon, everybody
Put some nickels in
And keep that old Nickelodeon playing"

Music, Music, Music
Dum-dee, dum-dee, dah-dee-dum
And music, music, music

Roy Orbison - In Dreams

Yet another song that appeared in a David Lynch movie, this time Blue Velvet.

This was released as a single in 1963.

The clip from Blue Velvet :

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
Go to sleep, everything is allright

I close my eyes, then I drift away
Into the magic night,  I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep to dream my dreams
of you

In dreams I walk with you, in dreams I talk to you
In dreams youre mine, all of the time, we're together
In dreams, in dreams.

But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone
I cant help it, I cant help it, if I cry
I remember that you said goodbye
Its too bad that all these things, can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams, in beautiful dreams

I'll come back to Roy Orbison later...

Dolly Parton - Jolene

Dolly Parton singing Jolene live;
what an amazing voice, what a lovely skirt!

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
Theres nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, jolene

And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you dont know what he means to me, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
Hes the only one for me, jolene

I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him even though you can
Jolene, jolene

Dion and The Belmonts - A Teenager in Love

The Belmonts and Dion DiMucci's romantic song celebrating the misfortunes of teenage love.

1959.

Each time we have a quarrel
It almost breaks my heart
'Cause I'm so afraid that we will have to part

Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love

One day I feel so happy
Next day I feel so sad
I guess I'll learn to take the good with the bad

'Cause each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love

I cried a tear for nobody but you
I'll be a lonely one if you should say we're through
Well if you want to make me cry
That won't be so hard to do
If you should say goodbye
I'd still go on loving you

Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love

I cried a tear for nobody but you
I'll be a lonely one if you should say we're through
Well if you want to make me cry
That won't be so hard to do
And if you should say goodbye
I'd still go on loving you

Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love
Why must I be a teenager in love
Why must I be a teenager in love
Why must I be a teenager in love

Frankie Valli - Can't Take My Eyes off of You

Originally written by Bob Gaudio, this song has been covered by many artists thorough the years. Here's Frankie Valli's version (1967), my favourite so far.

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak,
But if you feel like I feel,
Please let me know that it's real.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay
And let me love you, baby.
Let me love you.

Elvis Presley - Love Me

When looking for old, cheesy love songs, one should always watch David Lynch movies.
Here's Elvis' classic "Love Me", and below is the version by Nicolas Cage
in "Wild at Heart". I'm not really a fan of either of them, but i think mr. Cage's version is quite good...

Treat me like a fool,
Treat me mean and cruel,
But love me.

Break my faithful heart,
Tear it all apart,
But love me.

If you ever go,
Darling, I'll be oh so lonely
I'll be sad and blue,
Crying over you, dear only.

I would beg and steal
Just to feel your heart
Beatin' close to mine

Well, if you ever go,
Darling, I'll be oh so lonely
I'll be sad and blue,
Crying over you, dear only.

I would beg and steal
Just to feel your heart
Beatin' close to mine

Well, if you ever go,
Darling, I'll be oh so lonely
Beggin' on my knees,
All I ask is please, please love me
Oh yeah

Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, It was first recorded by Elvis in 1956.
