Cindy Lauper - I Drove All Night

I said I'd come back to Roy Orbison sometime....

Well, this song was composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and was originally recorded by Roy Orbison in 1987, but was only released on the album King of Hearts in 1992. In the meanwhile it became a hit single for Cindy Lauper in 1989 .
I don't really like the Celine Dion version from 2003 so I'll spare you that.
Somehow I find the lyrics a bit creepy...  there is  a thin line between romantic and stalking. I drove all night to get to you/ Is that alright / I drove all night / Crept in your room  ... That doesn't really sound alright to me, but whatever...

Cindy :

Roy :

I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh, huh

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

What in this world
Keep us from tearing apart
No matter where I go I hear
The beating of your heart
I think about you
When the night is cold and dark
No one can move me
The way that you do
Nothing erases the feeling between me and you

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
I drove all night... to hold you tight

Check out the story behind this song. Billy Steinberg writes some incredible lyrics.

I tried to listen to them both at the same time. Roy's version sounds more 'authentic' to me and more like a road song. Cindy's is more pop, I find it more empty but I really like her voice and the bedroom scene.
